Hip Pain Q & A

What is hip pain?

Hip pain refers to any discomfort you experience in or around your hip. This large ball-and-socket joint is made up of bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles, and the pain you’re experiencing may involve one or more of those parts.

Dr. Fuller requests that when you come to Mountain Spine & Pain Physicians for an evaluation of your hip pain that you be as specific as possible about the type of pain you’re experiencing and the location. Pain on the inside of your hip or groin usually indicates a joint issue, while pain on the outside of the hip may be related to your soft tissue.

What caused my hip pain?

Your hip pain may have developed from a range of causes. The most common causes of joint discomfort include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle strain
  • Dislocation
  • Fracture
  • Tendonitis
  • Labral tear
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection)

Although not as common as an injury or arthritis, hip pain can also develop from a type of cancer, such as leukemia or bone cancer.

What can I expect during a hip pain evaluation?

Dr. Fuller is a compassionate and knowledgeable physician and conducts comprehensive examinations when you come in for a hip evaluation. The goal of your exam is to find the underlying cause of your hip pain so he can develop the most effective treatment.

During your evaluation, Dr. Fuller reviews your symptoms and medical history and conducts a physical exam. He may perform specific tests of your hip to assess strength, function, and range of motion.

To confirm or rule out a diagnosis, Dr. Fuller may request diagnostic imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI.

What are the treatments for hip pain?

Dr. Fuller is an experienced and proactive pain management physician who takes a hands-on approach to help you get relief.

Your hip pain treatment plan may include physical therapy and ultrasound, or fluoroscopically-guided joint and tendon injections. The type of injection you need may depend on the cause of your hip pain.

Dr. Fuller also specializes in regenerative medicine and offers both stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which he may include in your treatment plan to help heal your injured or damaged tissue.
