Knee Pain Q & A

What is knee pain?

Knee pain is a common complaint that can happen to anyone at any time. Your knee is comprised of many different parts, including bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and muscle. The pain you experience in your knee may be due to an injury or disease affecting one or more of those parts.

Dr. Fuller isn’t only a pain management specialist, but also physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, and goes above and beyond to not only reduce your knee pain, but also improve function and health to prevent a recurrence.

What causes knee pain?

Your knee pain may be due to a number of causes. Some of the most common include:

  • Arthritis
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Meniscus tear
  • Loose body

Knee pain can also develop from a condition that affects your feet, hips, or back.

How is knee pain diagnosed?

Dr. Fuller conducts comprehensive examinations when you come to the office with concerns about knee pain to diagnose the underlying cause so he can provide the most effective treatment.

During your evaluation, he reviews your symptoms, as well as your medical history. He also performs a physical exam, paying close attention to the function and movement in your knee.

To confirm or rule out a diagnosis, Dr. Fuller may request diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays or MRIs.

What are the treatments for knee pain?

Dr. Fuller takes a proactive approach to the management of knee pain and offers treatments aimed at supporting your body’s own ability to heal itself.

Depending on the underlying cause of your knee pain, Dr. Fuller may recommend physical therapy and fluoroscopically or ultrasound-guided knee injections.

Dr. Fuller is an expert in regenerative medicine and also offers stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. These two treatments may be recommended to help accelerate the healing of your injured or diseased tissue. Regenerative medicine may be recommended for the management of your knee arthritis or to help heal your torn or damaged tendon meniscus or ligament.
