Tendonitis occurs when one of your tendons becomes irritated or inflamed. Your tendons are thick, ropey bands of tissue connecting your muscles to your bones. In most cases, tendonitis is due to overuse. For example, it’s a common sports injury.
Some of the common types of tendonitis include:
Tendonitis usually develops gradually and causes pain, tenderness, and mild swelling around the affected joint.
Most of the time, tendonitis develops from overuse, which is why it’s so prevalent in athletes who repeat the same movements over and over while training and competing in their sport. If you have a career that requires repetitive motion, you may also develop tendonitis. For example, if you spend all day typing at a desk, you could develop tendonitis in your wrists.
Your risk of tendonitis increases as you get older as your tendons lose flexibility.
In most cases, tendonitis subsides with rest and ice. However, in some cases, if your tendonitis is severe or chronic, you may need additional treatment to heal your body and alleviate your pain.
For example, Dr. Fuller may provide corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation in your tendons. He can also provide an immobilizing device and refer you for physical therapy.
Dr. Fuller offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to accelerate your body’s natural ability to heal itself. PRP injections are a serum made from a sample of your blood that includes 5-10 times more platelets than a typical blood sample. Your platelets are abundant in the proteins and growth factors that your body needs to repair damaged tissue.
Dr. Fuller injects the PRP serum directly into your injured tendon. Your body needs time to repair itself, so you may need to wait a couple of weeks before you see an improvement in your symptoms. Additionally, depending on the extent of the damage to your tendon, you may need a series of injections for optimal results.
